Non Profit || Tajikistan, Central Asia

In 2019, I traveled to Tajikistan with Open Doors to document their vital work supporting persecuted Christians in one of Central Asia's most remote and challenging environments.

Where: Tajikistan

Nestled in the heart of Central Asia, Tajikistan is a landlocked country bordered by Afghanistan to the south, Uzbekistan to the west, Kyrgyzstan to the north, and China to the east. Known for its dramatic Pamir mountain ranges, often called the "Roof of the World". Tajikistan is a place of breathtaking beauty and profound isolation.

This former Soviet republic is one of the poorest countries in the region, with limited natural resources and an economy heavily dependent on remittances from citizens working abroad, particularly in Russia. The rugged terrain and geographic isolation have shaped a resilient people living in one of the world's most challenging landscapes.

Who: The People of Tajikistan

Tajikistan's population is predominantly Muslim, with Islam deeply woven into the cultural and social fabric. The country reflects a unique blend of Post-Soviet influences, Islamic traditions, and ancient Tajik heritage.

Christians in Tajikistan represent a small minority, often converts from Muslim backgrounds. These believers face immense pressure from multiple sources: their own families, local communities, religious authorities, and the state itself.

Sources of persecution include family members who view conversion as betrayal, local imams and community leaders who enforce Islamic norms, and government authorities who maintain strict surveillance and control over all religious activity outside state-sanctioned Orthodox churches.

The Problem: Persecution in Tajikistan

Christians in Tajikistan face persecution from two primary engines: dictatorial paranoia and Islamic oppression.

State-level persecution: The government maintains extensive surveillance of religious communities, regularly raids church meetings, arrests and interrogates believers, imposes heavy fines, and confiscates religious materials. Since 2018, restrictive laws have made it illegal to gather without permits, possess unauthorized religious literature, or allow anyone under 18 to attend church services.

Family and community persecution: Converts from Muslim backgrounds face the harshest treatment. Women may be forced into marriage, locked in their homes, or subjected to physical abuse to pressure them to recant their faith. Men face loss of employment, beatings, ostracization, and loss of inheritance rights. Both face complete rejection from their families and communities.

Economic impact: Many Christians lose their jobs or face severe restrictions on their businesses. In a country with limited economic opportunities, this persecution can push families into desperate poverty.

The Solution: How Open Doors Helps

Open Doors works quietly and strategically in Tajikistan to support persecuted Christians in practical, life-changing ways. Their approach addresses both spiritual and physical needs, recognizing that persecution affects every aspect of believers' lives.

Christian Literature and Resources: In a country where possessing Christian materials can lead to arrest, Open Doors provides Bibles, discipleship resources, and teaching materials to help believers grow in their faith despite isolation.

Food and Supply Distribution: For Christians who have lost employment or been cut off from family support systems, Open Doors provides essential food packages and supplies to help families survive.

Rehabilitation Centre: Open Doors operates a rehabilitation centre for recovering addicts, offering hope and restoration to those struggling with addiction—a growing problem in the region.

Centre for Children and Single Mothers: Supporting some of the most vulnerable members of society, this centre provides care, resources, and community for single mothers and their children who often face extreme social stigma.

Business Opportunities - Beekeeping Projects: Perhaps one of the most innovative approaches, Open Doors has established beekeeping businesses throughout Tajikistan. They install beehives and train local Christians to manage them, creating sustainable income through honey sales. This provides persecuted believers with economic independence when traditional employment becomes impossible.

The Results: Access Despite Persecution

Through these projects, Open Doors is achieving something remarkable: ensuring that persecuted Christians have access to what they need to survive and thrive, even when their faith costs them everything.

Families who would otherwise go hungry receive food. Believers isolated from their communities find fellowship and support. Those denied employment gain dignified means of income through beekeeping enterprises. Children and mothers abandoned by their families find care and community.

The goal is not just survival, but flourishing. Open Doors works to ensure that persecution doesn't force believers to choose between their faith and their families' wellbeing. Instead, through practical support and creative solutions, Christians in Tajikistan can hold onto their faith while meeting their basic needs.

These aren't just programs, they're lifelines. In a place where following Christ can mean losing everything, Open Doors ensures that no one has to face persecution alone or without support.
